Recently, there seems to be a resurgence of the traditional male aesthetic in media and advertising. I came across some great examples on KMBA's
blog as well as the video below made by Brett Mckay, author of the website
The Art of Manliness. Good stuff...Personally, I think it is refreshing that the "man's man" has started to make a comeback. While gender roles, learned behavior, etc, all play a part in the development of "men", I think, for some time now, men, as they were known in the days of our grandfathers, have disappeared into the abyss of hand lotions, Ed Hardy shirts and ultra skinny jeans. Many men of this generation don't want to get dirty, take charge, or scuff their new white sneakers, and are perfectly fine with playing spectator while a woman is disrespected by another random man in their face. An extreme example, I know, but you get the point I'm sure. This is not the kind of man I was raised by. I honestly believe women have, and continue to prefer the strong, confident man classically styled , as opposed to the tight shirt wearing, slick and clean shaven, overly feminized man typically generalized as "metro".
What are your thoughts???
Homeboy makes some valid points in the video for sure!
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'm OK with being a pretty man. Totally opposite of my dad.
It takes a real man to even notice what's going on today. If you walked into my high school, you'd surely see the abyss in live color. I wish you were still here, I would love for you to share this insight with my all boys class. They need more positive male role models that are not athletes or rappers to come tell them they are worth it!
ReplyDeleteTafari I feel you man. As long as you are holding it down and handling biz you're all good.
ReplyDeleteBlu, thanks, the young brothers definitely need some guidance nowadays, and not only from the folks you mentioned. One day I'll be sure to make it up that way and speak if possible.
