I wanted to post some images of what I believe are timeless style moments and looks. As we all know, fashion and style are two different things. One can wear name brands like Versace and Prada all day, but ultimately, that individual's style is what makes the outfit work. Fashion trends come and go but true style is timeless, regardless of the current fashion of the day. Style is the emotional connection with your inner self that people immediately recognize when you walk into a room. It's in your stride, the way you sip your drink or smoke that cigarette. It's in the way you present yourself to the world. This is what makes the difference when you walk into a room with that Target purchased or vintaged sweater or outfit and people stop and look or approach you as opposed to just noticing the brand you are wearing, with no regard to the person who is wearing it.
As a 30-something man living in America, I find myself evaluating peoples' style everywhere I go. I also find myself evaluating mine. Some of us have to work harder at it than others, but it is possible to be comfortable and confident in your skin as well as the clothes on top of them, while still making a statement that accurately represents who you are as an individual. Lately, common sense has prompted me to purchase clothing that I know I will be able to wear for the next few years (as long as my waist and shirt sizes remain the same). In this age of the poor economy, it just makes sense.
More specifically, as a Black man in America, I find it very important that we understand and recognize how much perception can hold us back, or advance us. I believe there comes a time when a man has to grow up and hang those baggy jeans up and purchase a pair of properly fitting ones. Notice I didn't say "skinny" jeans. I don't personally feel that is a look for myself. By "properly fitting" I mean jeans that one can wear with some fresh kicks to the movies, and still be able to switch it up and throw on some nice dress slip-ons and a blazer for dinner if needed. Jeans that are flattering but not too tight (nut huggers). Jeans that are the correct inseam length so as to not look sloppy or bunched up at the bottom.
It's about putting up the New Era fitted for a day and throwing on a fresh "brim" or a news boy every now and then. It's about those subtle details that bring out the true you. Granted, the hip hop generation, which I grew up in at it's height in the heart of Brooklyn btw, still insists on glorifying excess and dare I say, tackiness (c) Big Ass Chain. As you see from the photos, our grandfathers knew how to dress. Now I'm not saying a suit, tie and fedora is what one needs to rock on the daily, I'm just saying that I'm glad we live in a time when brothers are finally getting it. I've come across some truly stylish men and women since I've entered this world of the blogger.
With that said, I wanted to say thanks to all the fly and stylish individuals who continue to lead the way when it comes to individuality, taste, and overall goodness when it comes to presenting yourself to the world.
If I'm following your blog, it's because I believe you are one of those individuals.

I'm with you -- unfortunately tasteful lids are sorely lacking in the average guy's wardrobe. A few years ago I put up the fitteds and started wearing stuff by Goorin Brothers and Vintage Crown Company. Haven't looked back.
ReplyDeleteGrown and sexy is in.
And SMH at the Big Ass Chain hahah
Good taste in headgear my dude...No doubt, fellas need to turn BET off sometime and see what the rest of the world is doing.
ReplyDeleteNow, I don't wanna be controversial or nut'in....but when it comes to style....(clears throat)
ReplyDeleteUK STAND UP!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALL DAY ER'DAY!!!! :-P
The only time I ever see really stylish dudes in the States is when I'm in NY and LA...and Creative, hats off to you, you're reppin' HARD for NC!!!! You, my brother, got style...
But as for many of your other country folk....hmmmmm.
A big, fat hmmmm....
But - I think Kanye, Cudi, Sa-Ra, Andre 3000 and many of these high-profile dudes are really setting a new standard. I just don't see these types of dudes on the streets yet...
I've stolen my grandfather's whole style classics never die. I still will rock a fitted once in awhile but Kangols are my weapon of choice.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed the words and images in this post, our grandfathers had it going on, so laid back, but so sharply tailored.
ReplyDeleteAnd nut huggers! That made me chuckle, I never ever want to see a man in nut huggers, what is the female equivalent? Camel toe? So wrong...
My husband is a original b-boy, he still dresses that way, Silk yellow fat boys jackets and red silk run dmc jackets, and t-shirts. He never has his pants round his ankles though, baggy, but not silly.
I like to adapt my style as I grow, if we are evolving, our sense of style will too.
Just saw this blog was linked to Street Etiquette. This is a wonderful post my brother I have to agree with you fully!
ReplyDeleteEspecially being African American sometimes I see my brothers, and wonder if they could make that transition of turning into a well dressed fellow. NYC is real diverse so atleast I still get some glimpses of good style in different variations. Then when I go back to the Bronx its like okkk.. ahahha
much appreciated my dude.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the great responses! Indeed, style is like I said, dictated by the individual, not by society and I there are some regions where true style is more prevelant than others (Millytilly, lol). Now I can get down with alot of things regarding looks, but I do embrace people being versatile and not one dimensional. Be it a Kangol(Incredible Hawkes) or the fitted cap everynow and then. Even skinny jeans have their place. It's all about rocking it to the fullest and being comfortable, all while looking and feeling fabulous.
ReplyDeletethe 3rd photo of the boys. is classic. GREAT
ReplyDeleteMy favourite blog so far!
ReplyDeleteNothing sexier than a man with style - yum!
